Web 2.0 101 Blog Post for Week 8
I took a look a variety of mashups on http://programmableweb.com/ . I found them to be interesting. One mashup I found was Free Influencer http://www.we-love-the.net/FreeInfluencer/. This mashup showed the influence of various people on other people through out history. Karl Marx was one of the people heavily weighed that has influenced a lot of people. Another mashup I found was a Lord of the Rings interactive Google map. I mentioned this to my husband and he told me about a World of Warcraft interactive Google map. The ideas for mashups are endless.
The other part of the exercise for this week was to take a look at http://rollyo.com/explore.html a website that allows you to create your own set of sites to search through. Gabe created a searchroll on librarianblogs to have us use to search for the topic of privacy. I found this to interesting too. A way to narrow searches down by customizing the sites that are searched.
Technology has come a long way and has a long way to go.

Web 2.0 101 Blog Post for Week 7
I created a Odeo account and subscribed to Geek News Central a geek technology podcast. I found Odeo to be a little hard to navigate. I need to take some more time learning how the Odeo website is organized.
YouTube was the next technology to investigate. I like YouTube you can find just about any topic in it. My sister recently showed me a Sesame Street Skit with Grover doing the his Near/Far bit that was in German. I believe that YouTube is our next TV or Movie outlet for the next generation. Anyone with a little knowledge can post a clip and it is instantly on the Internet around the world.
I see a use for Podcast in the library community like what Bart is doing at his facility with the lecture series. However, for our institution it may take a while for us to self produce podcast. The gap in technology that we have and the buy in from staff for podcasting may take a little bit. I do believe that the use of podcasting from other institutions and vendors will help our staff move along with technology.
Here is a YouTube video from our local university Wright State University on OhioLINK our statewide consortium resource.

Web 2.0 101 Blog Post for Week 6

For week 6 Online Photo Sharing was the topic. I created a Flickr account and upload some photos to it. I also updated my Facebook profile picture with at current picture and added the same picture to my Blog. I find this type of Web 2.0 technology wonderful. I enjoy taking pictures and now can use flickr to share them. Another Web 2.0 technology I can find my self spending a lot of time using.
I believe this concept could be used in our library to show locations of items and how our collection is organized. Another idea is for our archives away to share the thousands of photos we have in our collection with our staff and the community. This technology of photo sharing goes right in hand with week 7 podcasting and online hosted video.
Thanks,

Web 2.0 101 Blog Post for Week 5
Is this the future of all software products? What do you think? I do think this will be the future of all software products, residing on someones server and the user can login from any computer to access the application over the Internet. It may not be free to use for all types of software but it will be the future for software products. The collaboration part I think is neat and will defiantly be the way of the future to work on documents jointly.
I can see some limitations to the use of Google Docs beyond the fact that the features for editing in the documents is basics you need a constant Internet connection. So if your Internet connection is down you will be unable to work on your documents online.
Below is a sample present ion that I made in Google Docs for the class.

Web 2.0 101 Blog Post for Week 3
- How can social networking be used by MLA to connect members
- Should your library have a Facebook or MySpace page?
- Are there privacy concerns for individuals when using social networking sites.
- What did you like or not like about your experience with Facebook or MySpace.
This week I created a Facebook account and a LinkedIn account. I found Facebook to offer more for the social aspect of life with the groups and friends. I think LinkedIn may be better for MLA to connect with members because it is more professional. I looked a MySpace and it is has a lot to offer with the video and music capabilities.
Both Facebook and LinkedIn accounts were easy to set up and lose track of time on. Yet more applications to spend time adding information to.I do not foresee our library necessarily using Facebook or MySpace in the near future, maybe LinkedIn accounts for networking. I not saying we would not use theses type of applications but I would have to give some deep thought on how to apply it and get our patrons to use the social networking sites.
I do see privacy concerns with individuals social networking sites. I have seen a couple of people in the past post what I would concerned private but was listed to for all the world to see. It will be interesting to see how items posted in blogs, and on social networking sites will be used in the court of law for evidence for criminal cases.

Web 2.0 101 BLOG post for Week 2
I enjoyed learning more about wikis this week. I can see wikis being a little time consuming at first. I have not put much into my wiki yet because I did not have much time to do so.
What is the difference between a blog and a wiki? A blog is organized chronologically and wikis are organized by context. Blogs can only be edited by blog authors whereas wikis can be edited by anyone who has permission.
What sort of things might be better suited for a blog and better suited for a wiki? Blogs would be better suited for individuals chronologically an event. RSS feeds are easy to get for Blogs. Wikis are better suited for collaboration especially when writing a group document.
